Fraud investigations are some of the costliest crimes. In 2022, it is estimated that the cost of fraud in the United States hit $45 billion dollars. This huge number includes Worker’s Comp fraud, auto fraud, life and disability insurance fraud, and the list goes on. In order to get to the bottom of a case, a private investigator would be hired. RGH investigators are trained in effective and modern surveillance techniques where we find the evidence needed to uncover the truth. Private investigators understand that these cases are well planned out and can be quite complex. As many of us have experienced, scammers take great care in the details of deception. Let’s look into our most recent case of fraud investigation involving an automobile accident.
An Exaggerated Car Accident
RGH Investigations were called to investigate a car accident scene. The accident involved a driver and a few passengers in a black car, and another driver in a white car. The driver of the black car hit the white car. They all sustained damage to their cars and the passengers in it. The black car was driving around 20 mph around a bend and crashed at an angle into the white car. The black car’s driver filed a lawsuit, claiming that the manufacturer of the black car was faulty and wanted compensation as a result.
The client asked us to look into the accident to ensure that the claim was valid. Through background checks for the black and white cars, we found that both drivers have a history of suing car manufacturers. After further research, we found that the drivers would tamper with the vehicle to make it faulty and get into a planned or staged accident. They knew where to hit the car at a particular angle so the airbags would not deploy and the car would sustain severe damage. After all, it’s unusual to sustain such intense damage with a low speed collision.
Social Media Shows All
We also found that the driver of the white car was involved in a lawsuit with the driver of the black car. However, that case was flipped! The driver of the white car hit the black car! The same allegations were made in that lawsuit. That’s how RGH Investigations proved it was a case of fraud, and continued with a further background check. We went to social media — and social media shows all. Both drivers are friends. They had multiple pictures posted of them socializing together. We even found that the passengers in the black car had multiple lawsuits against insurance companies. There was one lawsuit per year!
It became clear that the accident was staged in order to commit fraud. It was a group of friends with a plan to make substantial gains financially filing lawsuits against auto companies. With our evidence, the insurance companies will take a deposition and (hopefully) get the scammers to admit on record that they did this on purpose. This will look bad for the scammers in front of a jury if it goes to trial.
